Prof Somnath Ghosh is a renowned academic with over four decades of experience in teaching, consulting and research. His work spans industrial relations and human resource management but largely applied to public systems and development organisations. He dedicated his career to sensitisng IIM students towards the issues of poverty and development.
After retirement, he continues to be intellectiually active. As a Senior Visiting Fellow of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies (RGICS), New Delhi, he contributes to the digital monthly Policy Watch. With a deep understanding of the social and political world surrounding us and a keen eye for detail, enhanced by painstatking fieldwork, he has been writing articles that have earned him a reputation as a skilled communicator and thought-leader.
He served on the Boards of a number of organisations which range from the RBL Bank Ltd, a Rs 100,000 crore private bank to small NGOs. He had earlier served on the Board of Krishna Bhima Samruddhi Local Area bank Ltd.

He is also the Chairman of the NGO, Sarva Seva Samit Sanstha (4S), which works in Bihar and Jharkhand with some of the pporest comunities – Musahars who are Maha Dalits and Suara Paharais, who are a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG). ( https://4sindia.org.in/ )
He is also Chairman of the NGO Sobat Foundartion in Mumbai which extends scholarships to needy bright students.
He is also Chairman of the NGO Firgun Foundartion which works in Ladakh and Uttarakhand promoting micro-enterprisses and livelihoods.
